Advertising is the act of drawing attention to your business' products and services in order to promote sales.

Advertising is probably a term you've heard on TV shows and movies a lot, and you might assume it is something only bigger businesses do. That's an easy assumption to make, but it's incorrect. Advertising is really just a small piece of a bigger pie—and that pie is Marketing.

If you've placed an ad in a local paper or publication, you've already done some advertising. Advertising for service businesses usually takes the form of paid and public attempts to get customers. This can be found in any one of the following mediums:

  • Newspapers
  • Direct mailings
  • Billboards
  • TV spots
  • Radio spots
  • Online ads (Google search, Facebook, etc.)

And those are just a few. Businesses are always trying to be creative, and find very interesting ways to both offer and deliver ads. For example, some local restaurants offer space on TV displays and menus for businesses to advertise their services and products. Or perhaps you've even seen an adveritising flyer on a wall somewhere.

As a small business owner, you should be aware of and explore as many types of advertising as you can. Just be sure to understand your target market before you get too far.
