The worst part about it is everyone still thinks they’re making objective decisions.  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌

Hiii,

Not gonna lie, I’ve already had a few crash-outs this week, but the emails are getting answered and the work is getting done, so I believe that’s what LinkedIn calls ✨resilience✨!

LOLOLLLLL.

Today, we’re discussing hiring managers mistaking looks and a firm handshake for job qualifications (this gives me premium ick), HR leaders being used like an unlimited emotional support subscription, and healthcare costs preparing to suplex benefits budgets again.

Also, Christine Song joins me to talk startup chaos and finding community before work fully eats you alive.

Packed agenda today, folks!

Sure, you could keep measuring employee engagement by who used the 👏 emoji during the all-hands.

Or SurveyMonkey can help HR collect feedback that’s actually useful!

With 90+ expert-built HR templates and AI-powered surveys created in under a minute, teams can uncover what employees really think before “everything’s fine” becomes a resignation parade. 😬

And please don’t let that feedback collect dust until next year’s survey! Regular check-ins help HR keep learning what employees need and ask whether those changes actually helped.

SurveyMonkey turns candid feedback into insights HR can use to improve engagement and retention, with no technical headache or leadership séance required. 💡

Employee listening should involve employees, which is a wild concept, apparently!

🗞️ Here's the Tea:

😲 Looks matter more than resume in first impressions, study says

The TL;DR: Apparently, your face and communication style may matter more than your résumé when someone forms a first impression at work. Those snap judgments can follow people through hiring and talent decisions for months. So much for our deeply analytical, evidence-based decision-making!!!

My POV: If your hiring process leaves room for simply liking someone's vibe, then congrats, you’ve built a bias playground! Structured interviews and consistent assessments tend to be the best guardrails against someone’s blazer or handshake deciding their entire career, which is even sillier when you say it out loud.

🎙️Mic Drop Moment:

“Community is the next big thing. It’s the moat for every organization.”

On the mic this week: Christine Song is the founder of the 5 to 9 Society. She has more than 20 years of HR and operations experience, including over a decade spent scaling venture-backed startups across North America. She’s also an entrepreneur and advisor who helps leaders create high-performing, resilient orgs without losing themselves to the work.

Pin this:

  • CEO-CPO compatibility can make or break the entire HR function.

  • Board data needs a story, context, and actual honesty behind it.

  • Being everyone’s fixer is not a sustainable operating model.

  • Your non-negotiables belong in the offer conversation. Don’t wait till six months later!

My H*ly Sh*t Moment: I think a really common way that a lot of HR leaders burn out is from entire companies treating their competence like an unlimited resource.

📊 Data Is My Love Language:

Stat: Healthcare costs could rise by nearly 10% in 2027

My spiral: Cool, so benefits budgets are about to get punched directly in the throat, again!

HR will be stuck balancing affordability and employee expectations, all while leadership asks you why you can’t simply shop around like health insurance is a cute little couch from Wayfair. ITS NOT THAT SIMPLE!!!

This makes benefits strategy a much bigger convo about plan design and what costs employees can realistically absorb.

Start preparing now because open enrollment is absolutely NOT the time to discover the math ain’t mathing!

🛠️ In Your Toolkit

When it comes to compliance, stuff that’s legal in California might not be legal in New York, and I can’t think of a more useful way to untangle this than by talking to an actual lawyer!

Join me on Sept 9th for this month's HR Therapy: Compliance Roulette: Multi-State Edition, where Kara Govro, Principal Legal Analyst at Mitratech, is helping us unpack pay transparency, pay equity, and the state-by-state regulations keeping HR awake at night.

You’ll get practical steps to help you stop playing the guessing game…and it might be a lil fun too!

🗣️ UNMUTE YOURSELF

Some leadership lessons come with mentorship, and others come with an uncomfortable lesson you’ll never forget. So, think about this one honestly:

What’s one leadership lesson you had to learn the hard way because nobody modeled it for you?

🛠️ TRY THIS TOMORROW:

Trust is one of those things leaders love to claim exists because nobody has openly revolted…yet.

But where someone feels trusted can tell you exactly which people and environments bring out their best.

Tomorrow, ask someone: Where do you feel most trusted at work?

I mean…what the hell did leadership expect from this, anyway???
