One day, sitting in the bullpen listening to her teammates conduct phone screens, Tara had an epiphany.
See, the recruiters were asking questions like “tell me about yourself” and “how much experience do you have with excel?”.
Which weren't bad questions, per se. But Tara knew they weren’t revealing the candidate’s whole story.
And they weren’t all that helpful at getting hiring managers to pick the right candidate.
So when Tara moved into a leadership role – the Global Director of People, Comms, and Culture – she made some changes.
For starters, she coached her interviewers to ask different questions. Like:
- How do you develop trust with a teammate?
- What are your preferred communication styles?
-
Do you work best in the morning or evening?
She didn’t ignore the ATS-recommended questions. She enhanced them.
And it made a huge difference.
Tara’s team was able to tell the story of why someone would be a great fit on a team… not just because of their expertise, but because of who they were as a human being.
Her interview process ensured that autonomous operators weren’t matched with micro-managers. And that people who needed a lot of oversight weren't assigned to managers who worked in isolation all day.
⭐️ And then (this is the best part)… Tara translated those effects into business results.
She used her storytelling skills to help CEOs and CFOs understand the value of an HR department’s work by tying it to results. To productivity. To efficiency. To longevity.
This is what Tara is going to talk about at Safe Space Summit.
If you want to get buy-in from your exec team, improve your candidate experience, reduce turnover, and make your org a talent destination, you are going to love this session.
