Ranking is only half the game now. AI decides what actually makes the answer. Here’s how to increase your chances. ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌

Hey Marketing Bestie,

Ok Ok... I admit it. I miss California summers now that I have a son.

Could get used to this. But really need to lay off 2x a day the burritos. When in Rome!

9 Rules That Get You Cited by AI

SEO isn't dead. Ranking on page one still matters. But it's no longer the whole job.

A growing share of searches now get answered inside ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude or Google's AI Overview, before anyone reaches your landing page. Rank well and still get skipped in the answer, and you're only winning half the game.

So the question isn't just "how do I rank" anymore. It's also "how do I get cited."

Most teams are still only playing the first game.

SEO gets you found. AEO gets you quoted. GEO gets you remembered.

Plenty of brands are missing at least one. Here's how to actually cover them.

1️⃣. Answer the question in sentence one. Not paragraph four.

AI engines skim for the answer and bounce. Put it right up top. Question as the header, answer directly underneath. Tell your story after that.

Save the slow burn for your group chat, not your blog post.

2️⃣. Bring receipts.

Stats. Named sources. Real quotes. AI models are rewarding specificity right now. Add a number. Cite a person. Make a claim you can back up.

Vague content gets skipped. Specific content gets cited.

3️⃣. Stop letting your content rot.

Old, stale pages are getting quietly passed over in favor of anything updated recently. Set a quarterly reminder to go back and refresh your top pages. Boring task, real payoff.

4️⃣. Don't skip the technical stuff because it's boring.

AEO doesn't replace SEO. It sits on top of it. If your site is hard to crawl, the rest of this list won't help much. Fix the foundation first.

5️⃣. Different platforms, different rules.

Google AI Overviews tend to pull from whoever's already ranking well. Perplexity rewards freshness and authority. Copilot leans hard on LinkedIn for B2B queries. Know your platform before you optimize for it.

6️⃣. Be skeptical of anyone promising a guaranteed spot in AI answers.

That kind of promise is usually a red flag, not a strategy.

7️⃣. Keep creating. Keep showing up where people actually are.

Publish consistently. Keep your titles, tags, and site structure clean. Show up on the platforms your audience already spends time on instead of waiting for them to find you. AI search didn't erase the fundamentals, it just added a layer on top of them.

8️⃣. Get mentioned off your own site.

AI models pull from Reddit threads, forums, review sites, and other people's newsletters, not just your homepage. A handful of genuine mentions on sites you don't own can carry more weight than another blog post nobody outside your team reads.

9️⃣. Track citations, not just rankings.

Check what ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overview actually say about your brand when someone asks. Rank 1 in search and get left out of the AI answer entirely, and you're still invisible to a growing chunk of your audience.
