Hiiii,

I've been go-go-go all week! It’s been the kind of normalized chaos where I've eaten lunch or been on the road during 1:1 calls, and…it be like that sometimes. 🤷‍♀️

Speaking of normalized chaos, that's basically today's newsletter.

Between a retention report that's giving major red flags and a stat about people staying in jobs just to keep their health insurance, this week is a masterclass in looking okay on the surface, but finding a nice, neat pile of issues after you start digging deeper.

Let’s dig, shall we? 🪏

You're the entire HR department, so you know what that means? 👀

You also might be the finance department.

Oh...and prob a dozen other departments too! 😵‍💫

Small business HR shouldn't mean doing everything solo with ZERO backup, but for a lot of orgs, that's the reality.

TriNet HR Plus can help you with some of that heavy lifting!

Imagine having help from certified experts, plus an all-in-one platform built to handle payroll, compliance, and the stuff nobody trained you for.

And the best part? You choose your level of support!

Stop Googling compliance questions at 11pm because you have actual humans to ask now. 😉

🗞️ Here's the Tea:

👀 Employers may soon find it harder to retain workers

The TL;DR: According to an Employee Retention Index from Eagle Hill, worker retention just hit its lowest point in a year... Basically, employees are frustrated with pay and feeling good about their options elsewhere. Millennials are leading the exodus, showing the steepest drop in retention and the most confidence that they could land something better. In other words, the quiet quitting era might be shifting into the quiet leaving era.

My POV: The main thing worth noting is that satisfaction with culture actually went up, but people are still eyeing the exit.

That tells you money and mobility beat vibes whenever someone's deciding whether to stay or bounce!

And since it's millennials who are most likely to bounce, this can eventually turn into a leadership pipeline issue, and it may be landing in your orbit whether you're ready or not.

🎙️Mic Drop Moment:

"Loyalty flows from credibility. If you do what you say you're going to do, people will respond in kind."

On the mic this week: Dave Garcia is a builder and speaker with nearly two decades of experience helping orgs turn strategy into measurable business outcomes. As the co-founder of Veep, he connects companies with elite independent operating partners while challenging traditional ideas about work and leadership. Dave brings a systems-thinking approach to some of today's most complex workplace issues, offering practical frameworks instead of performative takes.

Pin this:

  • HR can't separate workplace culture from what's happening in the world, ever. Employees bring those realities with them every day.

  • Company values only matter if leaders consistently act on them; performative neutrality erodes trust.

  • Financial stress often looks like disengagement and burnout, but some managers may misinterpret it as laziness.

  • The strongest HR policies create clarity while leaving room for thoughtful, human judgment when nuance is required.

My H*ly Sh*t Moment: We’re managing employees, but more importantly, we’re helping them navigate history in real time! That has never been, and will never be, something we can just leave at the door before we clock in for the day.

📊 Data Is My Love Language:

Stat: 1 in 4 workers stay in unwanted jobs for health coverage

My spiral: Health insurance has become a pair of golden handcuffs for millions of people, and I would hardly call that retention.

The people most trapped are the ones with medical debt or chronic conditions, and probably no financial cushion.

I hateee that our access to healthcare is tied to our employment and nothing stresses me out more than thinking about how terminating an employee means so much more than losing a paycheck it could also be losing access to medicine you need.

🗣️ UNMUTE YOURSELF

Have you ever made a culture fit call that was based more on vibes than you were willing to admit?

Hindsight makes those calls look very different, especially now that we know how much bias hides inside some of those decisions!

Something to think about:

“What's a ‘culture fit’ call you made that you'd make differently today?”

🛠️ TRY THIS TOMORROW:

We've all got at least one convo sitting on our plate that we need to keep putting off, because avoiding it feels easier than having it.
