Hiii,

After years of doing this job and watching an unreasonable amount of reality TV, I'm occasionally reminded that HR and reality shows have way more in common than anyone wants to admit! 🤔

Sooo many people aren’t expecting anything serious, but they’re still uniquely attached.

Case in point, this week's top story is literally about work feeling like a situationship to employees, so...cool, my theory has been confirmed! 😬

We've also got a mic drop moment on grief and leadership that will resonate, plus a ridiculous stat on "botsitting" that'll explain exactly why a team can look fine but still be falling apart.

Let's get into the mess!

Sponsored by EasyLlama

Everyone and their dog is asking HR to adopt AI into our orgs, on top of all of our other duties, with zero playbook to work from. 😑

EasyLlama built one, and on July 28th, you can too!

They're hosting a virtual event where HR leaders and compliance experts will get real about how teams are adopting agentic AI day-to-day and how to manage employees building their own AI workflows.

Why guess your way through the compliance and policies when you can get a practical infrastructure to use here? 😁

It's a lot to figure out on your own, so come and learn from the experts!

🗞️ Here's the Tea:

💔 Work feels like a situationship, employees say

The TL;DR: A new, juicy Zety report says work now feels like a "situationship," with 59% of employees saying they don't see a clear, long-term future with their employer. Woooof. Most workers don't feel their companies are committed to keeping them around either, but they're staying anyway.

Why? 60% cite money and 47% cite plain old familiarity, rather than loyalty or love.

My POV: A situationship works because both people get just enough to stay comfortable without ever having to commit to anything real, which is exactly what's happening with work!

Employees aren't quitting because leaving still feels scarier than staying, but that doesn’t mean they’re actually happy.

If a third of your team says growth is limited and almost a quarter feel unfulfilled, you’re left with people who haven't found the guts (or the funds) to leave yet.

Eventually, someone always leaves the situationship! ☕

🎙️Mic Drop Moment:

“Resilience is a skill you can grow over time, and grief plays a huge part in that.”

On the mic this week: George Boone is the Senior Organizational Development Consultant at University Federal Credit Union. Before finding his way into the people world, George spent a decade working in cloud operations and IT support, which is honestly quite the HR career plot twist. He’s passionate about building strong leaders, creating workplaces where people feel seen, and bringing a deeply human approach to how we work.

Pin this:

  • Expecting people to immediately operate at 100% after experiencing grief is deeply unrealistic.

  • Before assuming someone has a performance problem, check on the actual human being living a whole-ass life behind the output.

  • Bereavement policies shouldn’t try to decide whose loss is “important enough” to count. Grief looks completely different for everyone.

  • Loss can fundamentally reshape leadership by making us more aware of what others might be carrying and more intentional about making people feel seen.

My H*ly Sh*t Moment: Grief does not give a single shit about your calendar or the presentation you’re supposed to give in five minutes. We have to accept that it reshapes how it shows up at work, instead of pretending we can leave our emotions at the door!

📊 Data Is My Love Language:

Stat: Employees spend nearly one full workday a week "botsitting"

My spiral: This explains so much about why everyone feels more exhausted than efficient right now!

Think about it…We were promised AI would give us our time back, but instead we're spending it double-checking and cleaning up after tools that are wrong just enough to keep us on edge. 😑

That's a full extra shift of invisible labor nobody's accounting for in workload conversations!

If your team looks productive on paper but everyone's running on fumes, I honestly think this is part of the reason why.

🛠️ In Your Toolkit

If your CEO asked you today which roles AI changes and where your skill gaps are, would you have a real answer, or would it just be guessing?

Most people would be guessing, but now is the chance to fix that! 🤓

For this month’s HR Therapy, I'm sitting down with Amanda Arena and Will Self from Aon to unpack what data-driven workforce planning looks like, as well as everything you need to get there.

Come get the plan your CEO already assumes you have!

🗣️ UNMUTE YOURSELF

Take a few minutes to think about a decision that checked every box and made sense in the room, but then completely fell apart once real humans got involved.

“What's a people decision that looked good on paper and fell apart in real life?”

🛠️ TRY THIS TOMORROW:

Most feedback loops tend to focus on what's going well, so people don’t always feel comfortable saying the thing that's bothering them.

You might be surprised what comes up if you ask:

"What's one thing we should stop tolerating?"
