Hiiii,

I don't wanna make a big deal out of this, but…things are going suspiciously well this week. 😅

I’ll enjoy it while it lasts, because there is always a dumpster fire with my name on it just around the corner, and trust me, she is patient. She will find me.

But till then? I hope the universe is favoring you, too! 🤞

Today, we’re talking about a record-breaking wage theft case, a Gen Z job scam stat that broke my heart a little, and revisiting one of my fav shows with David Garcia.

Sound like a plan? Yes? Cool. Let’s commence!

The wildest thing about hiring is that we all pretend a 30-minute interview and one “they were great to work with!” reference call tells us everything. 😒

Resumes are just PR at this point, and gut feelings are historically unreliable. Just keeping it real here!

Like…be serious!

Checkr built a whole system so you can actually know who you’re hiring instead of just hoping they’re normal and won’t turn your Slack into the kind of gossip that puts Real Housewives to shame. 😅

Stop playing personality roulette with your org chart and take advantage of a system designed to hire with confidence!

🗞️ Here's the Tea:

💰 Minnesota recovers $1.28M in back wages in record-breaking case

The TL;DR: Minnesota just recovered $1.28M in back wages for 26 construction workers, which is the largest wage-and-hour recovery in the state’s history. Two firms shorted workers tens of thousands of dollars each, and it took years to claw that money back. The kicker here is that the companies blamed each other's subcontractors the whole way down.

My POV: Layers of subcontractors can occasionally mean layers of "not our problem," and that logic leads to people being paid late, or even worse, not paid at all.

If your org works with contractors or staffing agencies and you haven't audited how their workers are being compensated, this is your sign!

Wage theft doesn't always look like a villain. Sometimes, it just looks like a really messy org chart nobody cleaned up.

🎙️Mic Drop Moment:

"You can't necessarily rely on your manager to have your best interest in mind. That is a good starting point for managing your own career."

On the mic this week: Dave Garcia is the co-founder of Veep, a startup based that helps companies access world-class independent operators, offsite, and everywhere in between. Before Veep, he spent most of his career at Verizon, starting on the frontlines and eventually leading the in-house innovation team, followed by a stint in innovation consulting. Dave has been a people leader since he was 15, and his work now sits at the intersection of wellbeing, employee experience, and the very real way culture shows up in the day-to-day.

Pin this:

  • Your manager is basically the luck of the draw. Most orgs have zero accountability for how wildly uneven that distribution is

  • Unbridled ambition without focus or ethics is lowkey a liability waiting to happen

  • The meritocracy myth hits differently when you watch two characters in Industry with the same starting line get completely different outcomes based on class and gender

  • When companies protect top performers from consequences long enough, they enable bad behavior, but they also may as well make HR irrelevant

My H*ly Sh*t Moment: The managers you idolize early in your career shape who you become at work, and most of us don't ask whether we actually want to be like them until years later, when the damage is already done.

📊 Data Is My Love Language:

Stat: Gen Zers are most likely to fall victim to job scams

My spiral: Gen Z is so desperate to land a job in this market that 1 in 3 are knowingly ignoring red flags, and that should stop every one in their tracks! 😮

When candidates are that willing to overlook sketchy signals just to get a foot in the door, your legitimate roles are competing with scams for attention, and trust becomes a core part of your recruiting strategy, whether you planned for it or not.

If your job postings don't clearly signal authenticity, you're losing candidates to their own anxiety before they even apply.

Examples of this could be verified profiles, roles listed on your own careers page, or recruiters who look like real humans.

The job market is already hard enough, so the last thing you need is your pipeline shrinking because people can't tell you from a scam!

Feedback can be challenging, but you know what makes it 10x harder?

Dealing with five generations of workers who all have wildly different preferences! 😬

This month’s HR Therapy will be focused on adapting your approach for different employees, and building a practical system so that performance reviews can finally stop feeling like torture for everyone in the room.

🗣️ UNMUTE YOURSELF

I’m willing to bet that over time, there are things you’ve started accepting at work because it’s easier than pushing back.

Over time, tolerance turns into culture whether you meant for it to or not, which inspired my question:

“What are you currently normalizing that shouldn’t be normal?”

🛠️ TRY THIS TOMORROW:

During your usual standups and surface-level check-ins, it always seems like the same people are visible or always raising their hands.

On the flipside, that means there are folks who are easy to miss, too. They’re doing the work in silence, not asking for anything!

Ask yourself,  “Who on my team have I not really checked in with in the last month?”
