The $1 billion sale of mega-franchisee Sizzling Platter to Bain Capital sounds straightforward on paper, until you realize it required simultaneous sign-off from eight different franchisors.
Sizzling Platter, the Salt Lake City-based operator of more than 800 locations across Little Caesars, Wingstop, Jersey Mike's, Jamba, Dunkin', Red Robin, Cinnabon, and Sizzler, was acquired by Bain Capital North American Private Equity from prior owner CapitalSpring. The deal was announced in July 2025 and Franchise Times named it Deal of the Year in its May 2026 cover story.
What made it complex? Getting each franchisor to bless the transaction on different timelines with different standards. "That's what made it complicated, since you weren't dealing with a uniform target, because all the brands were starting in different places," CapitalSpring's Erik Herrmann told Franchise Times. "You're fighting a five-front war, so to speak, at the same time."
CEO Nate Garn, who spent 12 years with the company before taking the top seat, says Bain is already bringing "a greater sophistication" to the operation. Under CapitalSpring, Sizzling nearly doubled its footprint through a pandemic, which is a difficult thing to pull off. Now with Bain in the driver's seat and over $1.1 billion in 2024 system sales, the question is how much further the platform can go. |
Sparkle Grooming Co., the wellness-focused dog grooming franchise out of Scottsdale, is making a real move into Southern California, announcing a 22-unit regional development deal covering Orange County.
The deal was inked by Greg Busch and John Entz, existing regional developers who are already building the brand across San Antonio and Austin. Their decision to expand into Orange County signals conviction in the model across multiple major markets. Initial site selection is already underway, with a focus on high-density, pet-friendly communities throughout the region.
Sparkle's concept stands apart from the traditional grooming salon: the brand runs a quick-service model built around membership-based pricing, routine hygiene-first care, and a one-on-one experience designed to minimize pet stress and reduce wait times. The brand has now surpassed 500 development licenses awarded nationwide, with 20+ locations currently under development. "Bringing on partners like Greg and John are key to our growth," said Lyle Myers, Sparkle's Chief Development Officer. "Their experience as multi-market operators and their commitment across regions like Texas and now Southern California is exactly what we look for as we continue to scale the brand." Orange County is one of the most affluent and competitive pet care markets in the country. Execution here is a real signal test for the brand. |
Marco's Pizza just inked one of its biggest single-market commitments on the West Coast, signing a 12-unit development agreement with multi-unit operator Baljit Gill to expand across Southern California.
Gill started franchising in 1998 with Subway, spending over two decades building a 21-unit Subway operation and one Auntie Anne's across Southern California. When pandemic-era pizza demand surged, he began evaluating diversification plays, and Marco's won that process.
The Toledo-born brand, which now operates more than 1,200 stores in 35 states, recently ranked No. 50 on Entrepreneur's 2026 Franchise 500 and was recognized as America's Favorite Limited-Service Pizza by Nation's Restaurant News. Of the 955 franchised stores open for all of 2024, 40% hit or exceeded the system's average sales volume. A 12-unit deal with an experienced multi-brand operator in one of the country's largest pizza markets is the kind of development credibility that signals where a brand is heading. Marco's has the unit economics to back it up, and a West Coast push gives the brand an important new growth runway for 2026 and beyond. |
