Our industry changes fast. To retain customers and outpace competitors, we have to stay updated.
Enter: hacks, best practices, and other forms of GROWTH FOLKLORE.
They’re convenient when we’re talking about something complicated and mysterious, like… THE ALGORITHM. 👻
They’re actionable when they’re specific, like:
✅: Post Reels, instead of Stories.
✅: Put the link in the comments, instead of the caption.
✅: Post at X time on X day.
But, they’re NOT always accurate. Not anymore. Not for your brand. Nor anyone's.
The truth is, algorithms change A LOT faster than the guides that claim to know.
By the time thought leaders 🙄 catch on and start spouting the new “rules,” the algorithm’s changing AGAIN.
The solution: Continuously testing our assumptions, ourselves.
Taking advice is NOT a replacement for doing the grunt work.
Get in there quickly and start testing.
Especially if there’s a new feature. Platforms usually reward early adopters, so chop chop!
Don’t test once.
Test MULTIPLE times, because this is an experiment.
Give it a reasonable amount of time to succeed or not.
If it doesn’t work, no worries. These were just tests. You can stop now.
If it DOES work, keep going.
Celebrate wins with a grain of salt.
Something hit. YAY!
Don’t attribute it to the sheer brilliance of that text-only post.
That may be PART of the win, but it’s not the whole story.
And, last-touch attribution is never a good look.
When things go right, it’s because ALL the variables have aligned just so.
Right format, right message, right day, right time.
It’s not just the algorithm, it’s the ALCHEMY.
So let’s get into the mix.
