Vol 2: Lucky Moments in HR |
This is a story about a girl named Lucky. Wait, no it’s a story about an HR team named Lucky.
Honestly, this is a newsletter about HR and the lucky moments we sometimes experience. We're back baby!!
Vol. 2 of lucky moments in HR because last year’s edition wasn't enough and honestly? We have so much more luck to discuss…
But before we get into it all, a quick note on how I’m using “lucky” here.
I’m joking about lucky moments here but we in HR know that most of what looks like luck, it's actually years of building relationships, paying attention, and doing the unglamorous work that nobody sees.
The trust you built with that hiring manager. The notes you kept on that employee. The follow up messages you continue to send. The training you ran for the fifth time hoping something would stick. The documentation you wrote and tirelessly reviewed. ALL THE THINGS. So just know, I know you’re putting in work behind the scenes when it comes to some of these lucky moments below and I’m not trying to make light of your incredible hard work. ❤️
🍀 Happy early St. Patrick's Day, let’s have some fun.🍀 |
#1: When you were right about the new hire you advocated for: |
Have you ever gone HARD for a candidate, like, advocated to the max to hire someone? I sure have!!! And let me tell ya, it's not the easiest situation at times.
Maybe you saw something, a quality, an energy, a vibe, that just screamed "this person will thrive here."
Buttttt not everyone was convinced. There were questions. There were doubts. And there may have been a very long debrief. Then the new hire start. And they are INCREDIBLE, adding value day one. People are obsessed. Suddenly everyone remembers that they "always had a good feeling about them." Sure ya did. What felt lucky to everyone else, is just you being so freakin’ good at spotting talent. You're not even mad though because you're too busy thinking about your next discovery. Who's next? Who's out there waiting to be found? You're basically a talent scout now. You're ready to find the next Britney. 🎤 |
#2: When you flagged an employee as a flight risk and then right on schedule boom you get a 2-week notice from them: |
There's no better feeling than when you flag something and BAM it happens.
Sometimes we see things that no one else sees. It's basically HR's superpower. So when we raise our concerns and they're not taken seriously it makes me infuriated.
But I'd rather raise my concerns and document the plan just in case, rather than stay silent and not try to get ahead of things. Nobody wants to lose a good employee. 🔮 But there is something deeply validating about predicting what is coming…
Was it luck? Maybe. Or maybe we're just really, really good at this. |
#3: When a manager has a hard convo and it actually lands with the employee: |
Hard conversations are… hard. (I know, groundbreaking.)
As HR we spend a lotttttt of time coaching managers to have them, living in fear of how they'll go, and then bracing for the potential fallout.
So when a manager delivers difficult feedback AND the employee actually receives it, sits with it, and comes back better? That feels like pure magic!!!!! No escalation. No he said, she said. Just two humans communicating like adults.
🍀 Was it the coaching? Was it the timing? Was it luck? Honestly, maybe all three.🍀 |
Next week, I’m diving into the mindset shift of NEW. All quarter I’ve been writing about new ideas, new processes, new, new, new.
But new things can be a lot to manage…so next week we’re going on a mindset deep dive. So you can tackle newer things easier in the future. |

📚 What I’m reading: Evil Genius by Claire Oshetsky I was hooked from just reading the description but the cover is also chef kiss perfection.
-
📺 What I’m watching: Southern Hospitality. Listen I loooove reality TV. Think what you want but reality tv is a study in human behavior and therefore I AM HOOKED to southern hospitality. I’m conquering bravo shows one day at a time.
-
📱 What I’m hitting up the group text with: Advice on conference wear. Idk if it's the fact that I haven’t been in an office full time since 2020 but sometimes I get sooo much stress about dressing for the outside world. Next week is Transform and I've already been preparing to be in REAL clothes for multiple days in a row.

I was obsesssssed with this song the first time I heard it and it makes sense because it’s co-written AND produced by one of my faves - Rostam.
It’s folksy and haunting and I won’t judge you if it’s the only song you listen to today. <3 |
