How to Hire a Marketing AI Agent |
🤖 First, what even is an AI agent?
|
It's like hiring a junior analyst who never sleeps and never misses anything. You give it a job. It runs. Forever. The difference between an AI tool and an AI agent: a tool waits to be asked. An agent doesn't wait for anything. It just runs.
This is 1 example of what you can build. The rabbit hole goes very, very deep. 🐇🐇
|
The Example: A Competitive Intelligence Agent |
Let's say you run a service business. Agency. Consulting firm. Coaching practice. You get it.
Your competitors are out there right now. Repositioning. Rewriting their homepage. Running new ads. Quietly moving into your lane. Maybe not on a Sunday but maybe so. Let's assume they are always on it.
And you're finding out about it 6 months later when a prospect says "oh we went with them instead."
This agent helps.
|
STEP 1️⃣: Write the Brief |
Before you touch a single tool, write down exactly what you want this thing to do. Bad brief: "Monitor competitors."
Good brief: "Watch these 5 competitors. Every week, tell me what changed, what it MEANS, and what I should do about it. Only flag things that affect my positioning or pipeline. Ignore everything else."
Vague brief = useless agent. Garbage in, garbage out. This is still true in 2026.
|
STEP 2️⃣: Set Up Your Sources |
Tell it exactly where to look. For a service business:
- Competitor websites and service pages
- Their LinkedIn pages and founder profiles - Job postings (more on why this matters in a second) - Their ad copy - Meta Ad Library and Google Ads Transparency are both free Reviews on G2 or Clutch
- Their newsletters - just subscribe. It's not weird. Everyone does it.
Tools: Feedly pulls competitor content into one feed automatically. Google Alerts tracks name and keyword mentions across the web. Etc. |
STEP 3️⃣: Build the Automation |
This is where it stops being a hobby project and starts being an actual system.
Zapier or Make connects everything together. When Feedly finds something new, Zapier grabs it, sends it to ChatGPT or Claude with your instructions, formats the output, and drops a clean report in your Slack or inbox every Monday morning.
You set it up once. It runs while you're doing literally anything else. |
STEP 4️⃣: Force a Structured Output |
Do NOT just ask for a summary. Tell it EXACTLY what to deliver every week:
- What Changed - 2-3 sentence factual summary - Pattern or One-Off? - Is this part of something bigger or random? - Strategic Interpretation - What does this actually signal?
- Risk Level - Low / Medium / High - Recommended Action - Ignore / Counter-message / Update your positioning / Create a content angle / Call a prospect before they do
No structure = a wall of text you skim once and never open again. |
STEP 5️⃣: Upgrade to Pattern Detection |
This is where it gets interesting.
Basic agent output: "Competitor published a case study." Cool. Noted. Moving on.
Pattern-detecting agent output: "This is their 3rd case study this month, all featuring mid-market clients. They're moving upmarket and leaving SMB behind."
NOW you're playing chess.
Add this one line to your instructions: "Do not flag isolated events. Look for repeated behaviors across 30, 60, and 90 day windows. Surface trends, not one-offs."
1 line. Completely different output.
|
STEP 6️⃣: Add Prospect Intel |
Here's where it gets REALLY useful. Your agent can watch your prospects too. Not just competitors.
A company that just raised a Series B and hired a new CMO is a completely different conversation than one that's been quiet for eight months. Your agent should know the difference before you get on the call.
Add target account LinkedIn pages, job postings, and funding announcements as sources.
Tools: LinkedIn Sales Navigator for account-level alerts. Owler for automatic tracking of funding news, leadership changes, and company updates - all in one feed, no scraping required.
Add this to your instructions: "Flag any signals from target accounts that suggest new budget, leadership changes, or strategic shifts that would make them more likely to need us right now."
Now the agent feeds your pipeline AND your strategy.
|
Small problem: AI agents reset every single run. No memory of last week. Completely blank.
Fix it by building a simple log. Every time the agent runs, it saves findings to a Notion doc or Google Sheet. Next run, it reads that first.
Now it can tell you: "Over the last 90 days this competitor shifted from speed messaging to ROI messaging. This week confirms it's not an accident."
That changes how you position yourself in every sales conversation going forward.
|
STEP 8️⃣: Add the Don't Overreact Rule |
This 1 is IMPORTANT. Add this line to your instructions: "If a change is minor or isolated with no supporting pattern, classify it as routine activity and leave it out of the report." Without this guardrail you get 40 alerts a week, spend 3 hours reading them, make 0 decisions, and quietly abandon the whole system by week 3.
Keep the signal clean. Less is more. |
This is 1 agent. 1 use case. |
The same exact framework builds a lead nurturing agent, a content repurposing agent, a client retention agent, a proposal drafting agent.
Agents can watch, analyze, draft, send, and follow up. Without you touching any of it. This is the floor. Not the ceiling. |
