â Starbucks workers sue over company's new dress code and costs to employees
The TL;DR: Starbucks workers in California, Colorado, and Illinois are suing the company over its new dress code, which requires solid black shirts under the green apron. Employees claim theyâre being forced to buy these items out of pocket (without reimbursement) even though state laws mandate employers cover such expenses. Starbucks says it gave two shirts for free, but workers argue thatâs not enough and disciplinary action has been tied to noncompliance.
My POV: Even âsmallâ policy changes, like a tweak to the dress code, can carry major compliance, cost, and employee experience risks.
If state law says you have to cover expenses, you should probably cover them!
More importantly: nickel-and-diming employees when theyâre already juggling unpredictable schedules and low wages is an easy way to erode trust and make your workplace look out of touch. |

My spiral: Whatâs wild about this stat is that purpose has become the baseline for job satisfaction, which I love BTW!
But this also means that purpose isnât one-size-fits-all.
For some, itâs about changing the world. For others, itâs making enough money or gaining skills to change their own world outside of work.
For HR, that means stop trying to package one glossy âpurpose statementâ and start building flexible environments where different definitions of purpose can actually coexist! |
