Did you know that 2 years after receiving the Nobel Peace Prize in 1966 that the average American still had unfavorable views of Martin Luther King?

63%  of Americans to be exact…

But today, most Americans would say he had a positive impact on the country.

I share those facts to highlight that making change can be hard and not well received at first.

Today’s edition is dedicated to those who are actively trying to make changes in their workplaces.

I’ve compiled a list of 5 previous newsletters that highlight things in our workplaces that need to change.

And guess what? HR can lead that change.

To note: In the 56 years since Martin Luther King was assassinated we have made strides as a nation but there is still much work to be done.

5 editions to read when you need some inspiration to change things at work:

Does anyone love a good Buzzfeed listicle or just me???

I put my own spin on it and compiled a list of previous IHIH editions to help give you an inspo for things that should change at work!

#5: Supporting Employees Mental Health

Why this made the list: Nearly 50% of employees report being stressed at work!!! HR teams should consider how they are supporting employees and their mental health.

#4: Stopping Inequitable Treatment

Why this made the list: Sometimes we can create inequity without even realizing it! This edition dives into common areas where there are inequity at work and what you can do about preventing that.

Bonus: this edition dives into why talking about unfair treatment at work can be difficult.

#3: Supporting parents & working mothers

Why this made the list: We learned a lot during the pandemic but one of the biggest lessons we learned in regards to work? We aren’t doing enough to support working mothers & parents.

Bonus: this edition dives into what we get wrong about parental leave.

#2: Ending the Cycle of Bad Feedback

Why this made the list: I am TIRED of hearing about the terrible feedback that has been given. Feedback impacts so much and shouldn’t be taken lightly. So this edition is on the list because it teaches you how to give good feedback. You can easily repackage it as a manager training.

#1: Securing buy-in for DEI

Why this made the list: the fact that we’re still having to make the business case for DEI or that prominent leaders are questioning the fairness of DEI makes me sick to my stomach. This edition made the list because it dives into why DEI initiatives are important and how you can secure the buy-in you need.

To note: this was written last year but still incredibly relevant!

Next week on I Hate it Here:

Thanks for joining me for this special edition and I hope this inspired things you want to change at work.

I know trying to make big changes at work can be terrifying.

But HR has an immense amount of power and responsibility to make those changes.

The poet Alice Walker wrote: the most common way people give up their power is by thinking they don’t have any.

Never forget: You have power and you can make change happen.

Next week, i’m back at it to talk about how to set expectations across every level in an organization.
