Every now and then I feel the urge to stir the pot.  JK it’s more like every day and in every newsletter.

Today is no different!

If you’re trapped at home with your family and need some entertainment here are 3 topics you can bring up to stir the pot!

Return to Office:

Most everyone I know has an opinion on this topic.

See: Linkedin this past year where everyone felt a way about CEOs demanding a return and learning more how inequitable the office actually is.

Why this can be a pot stirrer: everyone experiences work differently and that experience also informs their feelings around RTO.

Just throw out the line: why does it matter where someone works and wait for the responses!

Pay Transparency:

The general population seems pro pay transparency because it can help eliminate inequity and hold HR teams + others accountable.

But where I find the disagreements usually start?

Around the levels of transparency:

  • Full transparency = everyone knows everyone’s salaries
  • Transparent in accordance to law = you’re following the laws which are mostly set around sharing pay bands for roles.
  • Not transparent = you’re not sharing anything.

Thought exercise: ask your family & friends what would happen if they knew the salaries of everyone they worked with.

Pot. Stirred.

Do you think employees would be more or less engaged?

How did these questions make you feel?

Lots to unpack here…

AI:

I can’t say the words AI without thinking about Skynet. IYKYK.

IDK about you but I grew up with a healthy fear of robots (thank you Terminator) and high expectations of technology (blame Back to the Future – still waiting for my flying car).

So bringing up AI with your family might not seem like a pot stirrer but also hear me out…

Everyone has different ideas about what the future would look like and how we’re going to leverage tech and that makes conversations around AI pretty interesting.

My favorite thing to do recently is ask my fam & friends how they’re using AI!

Yes, I am a dork.

But there are so many options out there that I never considered. I can’t go a week without having at least 1 convo about AI.

Why this can be a pot stirrer: because there’s so much unknown about AI and what it could transform. Not to mention, there are the claims that AI will replace people at work.

If you’re looking to get up to speed on AI my friend Amanda Halle writes an amazing newsletter called Unraveling AI

For when you don’t want to talk:

You don’t have to stir the pot at all! Peace is nice.

Next quarter on I Hate it Here:

The end of the year can be a magical time but honestly I’m SUPER pumped for what comes next.

Next week I’m kicking off what I’ll be writing about for Q1.

It’s a topic that I’m really excited about and I think you will be too.

Bonus: I’m also dropping a special surprise!

You’ll have to wait until next week to learn more.
